Monday, November 3, there will be a LGBTQ-SF&F meet-up/hangout/get-to-know-ya thing. We're aiming for seven or so at Weatherspoons/Postern Gate. While we do acknowledge that our allies are wonderful people, we'd like this to be a safe place for LGBTQ SF&Fers who might not be out (or want to be out) to the rest of the society. Jai will be "hosting", so if you're not sure who else will be there, look for a person with a floof of bright blonde hair on top.

Mordheim: Border Town Burning is holding its second session this Saturday in G/001 and G/002.  Don't worry if you didn't make it to the first session, or have never played Mordheim before, as we have plenty of models you can borrow if you want to start.  Again, I'll be there from around midday to help with warband creation and setting stuff up.  If people could gather for one o'clock, hopefully we can get the first round of games started soon after.  For more information, find me at Social on Thursday.

Following the last games, some people took to the forums and wrote reports of how their warbands fared.  That's awesome and I can only encourage more of it.  If I remember my camera we could even have some photos to accompany these.  I'd like to keep a central record of campaign point progress, but not everybody updated the list on the whiteboard after the second game.  I can get updated numbers if you're there on Saturday but if you won't be, please could you let me know your warband's progress so far.

Mordheim start

The Mordheim Border Town Burning campaign kicked off this weekend, and following the first two games the Reiklander Mercenaries aiding the Celestial Protectorate have fared well while the bestial Scions of Chaos have faltered - Big Gruff, the aspiring champion of Nurgle, died in his first game!  The sneaky rats of Clan Skryre are working on some kind of insane and no doubt dangerous secret plan, and Badruk the Orc warboss is building strength for a mighty Waaagh!  Chaos Dwarf slavers have been sighted in the area, while two opposing groups from the Church of Sigmar have begun to make their presence felt, the Witch Hunters aiming to purge the borderlands of all abominations while the Sisters of Sigmar aid the Celestial Protectorate of Cathay in containing the Chaos threat.

If you'd like to lead a warband into this situation to shake things up a bit or seek fame and fortune amid the chaos, the next games will be taking place on Saturday of Week 5 (1st November).  For more information you can send me an email, check out the forums or find me at a social.

You should totally join the society forums

Heyo! I’m Wings, your friendly neighbourhood forum admin. The forums have been operating in their current form since early 2012 and are a hub for organisation, discussion, and random links to things we find cool.

The moderators (Sam and Kerry) and I are volunteers rather than elected positions, with oversight from the Webmaster (who is elected). We run the forums on the basis that it’s a place for our friends to socialise and we want them to feel welcome and safe. We have a list of forum rules and general posting guidelines to help with this, as well as a statement of what you can expect from us in return. There’s also a handy ‘report’ button if there’s a particular post or thread that you want us to do something about. We do appreciate feedback on how we run things, so if you want to discuss stuff with us face-to-face then I’m generally at LARP and occasional socials.

So, serious stuff out of the way… discussion tends to be a bit chaotic, with regular side-tangents and jokes. It’s a great place to organise general hanging out, tabletop games, weapons practise, or other things which involve people. You can also find links to shiny things like Assassins Creed with Kittens or Alan Rickman flipping a table. Come, join us. We have cake.

Wargaming: post-convention update

Hi guys,

First off, thanks to all those who came to convention and played games or expressed interest in wargaming.  I gathered that we've got a fair few Warhammer 40k players.  I know a couple of people were suggesting they'd make use of the SF&F forum to try and organise games, and if there's a time that suits enough people, possibly have a regular gaming evening.  I hope that we can get things rolling in the coming weeks.

Second, I'm going to be starting my Mordheim campaign, using the Border Town Burning setting, on Saturday the 18th.  We'll be in rooms G/001 and G/002.  I'm going to be there from around midday, and will be available to help with warband creation, rules questions and so on in between last minute organisational faff and realising I've not printed enough stuff out.  If things go smoothly, I'm hoping for games to kick off around 2pm, so if you're comfortable you know what you're doing, that'll be the time to aim for.  Rooms are booked till midnight, but we'll probably have finished before then.  Probably...

I was planning on being at Thursday's social, but due to work I won't be available to make it this week.  I should be contactable by email if you've got any questions about the campaign.  Alternatively, post on the forum, as I check there fairly regularly.  If you're intending to play, it'd be great if you could let me know which faction and objective you're going with before Saturday, and again if you'll want to borrow models to use on the day as there is a limit to the amount of stuff I can carry!

All the rule books and stuff you'll need are available from the Mordheim Resources post on the forums.  Having a copy of the rules relevant to your warband to hand, either electronic or print, is useful, especially early on when you're not sure how everything works.  Something to be aware of, is that based on previous games, we've tweaked a few of the rules.  More information on that will be appearing on the forum sometime over the next few days.  Be aware that if you search for 'Mordheim Rulebook' using Google, you'll get results including 'Mordheim - DeDS' and 'Coreheim'.  These aren't the official rulebooks, so please don't use them.

I'll stop typing now.  Keep an eye on the SF&F forums; I'll be posting more stuff there.

Cheers, Dave
(Abnormal Member for Wargaming)

Impact LARP Introductory Session

Convention, Sunday 12th October 2014

Impact is the new Sunday and Wednesday campus contact Live-Roleplaying system beginning this term. An introductory session designed to show new players how the game works and get them set up with characters and costume will be running on Sunday the 12th of October - that's the Sunday of the Convention. Come along if you are interested in finding out what this LARP thing is all about!

Impact is the story of humanity's last city, struggling to make its way in a strange new world inhabited by alien creatures. You can take up the role of one of these last humans, or one of their newly-found allies, as they venture forth into the unknown to beat back the tide of savage wildlife and defend their fledgeling confederation against the invading legions of a hostile kingdom bent on their subjugation!

Week 2: New Freshers, Old Faces

Monday 19:00 - Magic the Gathering in the Peter Lee Dining Room, Wentworth
Monday 20:00 - Boardgames in G/002 (also in James SCR, G/001 and G/010)
Wednesday 18:00 - Impact in D/L/002, D/L/003 and D/L/007

Friday 19:00 - Sunday 24:00 - Convention in James College (G/001, G/002, G/010, G/013) and spill-over into Wentworth (W/035E, W/035F, W/301, W/304, W/306, W/307)

Convention

All weekend, there'll be boardgames, DVDs etc around for people to drop in , play and get to know each other.  We'll also be handing out membership cards (which give 10% off game books at Traveling Man), and have goody bags for new members.

A lot of different games and introductory events will be running throughout the weekend, with exact times and sign-up for space limited games in G/001. These will include:

Friday

  • Introduction to Mordheim (Dave)
  • Baron Munchausen (8pm - Luke & Toph)

Saturday

  • Introduction to Mordheim/Wargaming (Dave)
  • Introduction to Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 Edition (midday - Thomas)
  • Introductory to Changeling LRP (7pm - Ayesha)
  • Gloom (early afternoon - Jai)
  • Ghostbusters Tabletop (Hannah)

Sunday

  • Introduction to LARP: The Rise and Fall of Impact (9am)

At some point:

  • Introduction to Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition (Paul)

More details below:

Baron Munchausen (Friday 8:00 p.m. - Midnight)

You take the place of a Great British Aristocrat, with many a tall tale to tell. Naturally you cannot necessarily remember all the tales you've told, so one of your peers will give you a little prompting. After your tale, you request a tale from another chap, and so the hours are wiled away.  Baron Munchausen is a party game, and we'll be using a system of drop-in-drop-out whenever you want with no pressure to tell a story. So if you want to meet and get to know people then this'll be there. If you are waiting for something else to start, drop in and share a story with us. If you're unsure about this roleplaying malarky, then this can let you dip your toes in the water. This will be being run by Luke and Toph, so just ask after one of us at social if you want to learn more.

Introduction to Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 Edition (Saturday, Midday)

Dungeons and Dragons is probably the most famous tabletop RPG, and a good introduction to 'dice and minis' RPGs in general.  You'll play a group of adventurers, dispatched to discover the fate of a towns missing ships.  No experience necessary, so if you want to find out what tabletop gaming is like, look for me (Thomas) at Social or Convention.

If you have any questions, or if you are running an event and want a room booked, or it publishing in this email, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Wargaming campaign for the new term

Dave, our Abnormal member for Wargaming introduces a new game he will be running starting this term.

Mordheim: Border Town Burning

Mordheim is a skirmish wargame set in the Warhammer: Fantasy Battles world.  Small bands of warriors fight each other in the pursuit of fame, glory and power.

I'll be bringing some stuff to the convention to run some intro games on Friday evening, and again on Saturday if people are interested. Starting this term, I'm planning to run a Mordheim campaign using the Border Town Burning community-written expansion. I'm looking at starting this on Saturday of Week 3, and then running games every two weeks until we have a winner/get bored. The book can be found at that link, and also through the Mordheim Resources post on the forum.

What's it about?

Travelling the Silk Road to Cathay is a dangerous business for merchants of the Old World. Far more so when the trails take you dangerously close to the Chaos Wastes, where the champions of the dark gods are battling for the ownership of four powerful artefacts that will allow them ascension to daemonhood. Struggling to bring peace to the borderlands, the forces of order also seek these artefacts so they can seal them safely away from the hands of marauder chieftains. Add to this mix scheming villains wanting to take this power for themselves, and mysterious factions intent on ruining everyone's plans to further their own goals, and it's a surprise any caravans makes it there and back at all!

The campaign takes the game away from the city of Mordheim, and so has all new scenarios (including a tavern brawl!), random encounter tables, exploration tables, etc. It also introduces Objectives, which are a series of goals you work towards through the games, and get bonuses for achieving them. This aims to add a narrative element to why all these fights are happening - you could be one of the merchants trying to make a profit, a Chaos champion intent on daemonhood, or an Orc warboss looking to become the meanest git in the land, and so on. Once a warband has achieved all its objectives, it wins the campaign.

If you're interested in playing, head over to the SF&F forum where there's more information about what's going down in the Cathayan borderlands.  I'll also be around at Thursday's social for a while if you want to chat about the game.

Other wargames

We've got several society members who play Warhammer 40,000, including some new starters and people like myself who are picking up 7th edition after not playing for a while.  If you'd like to organise a game and want a room booking, let us know.  If you'd like to learn how to play, we can organise an introductory game.

Organising wargaming activities is something that SF&F hasn't done for a while.  As such, we don't have a great range of up-to-date rulebooks or miniatures.  If there's a game you want to play and you have the stuff needed to play it, but you're lacking an opponent, you can advertise on the forums or Society newsletter email.  If you'd like to book a room to play in, or organise an event, let us know and we'll do what we can to help.

Board Game Review: The Red Dragon Inn

James Lees is our Abnormal Member for Board Games. Today he reviews one of the games in the society hoard: The Red Dragon Inn.

The Red Dragon Inn has a very fun premise. You are all adventurers returned from a long, hard quest so you decide to go for a drink at (you guessed it) The Red Dragon Inn! However, being adventurers, it isn’t long until drinking is turned into a competition.

The object of the game is very simple: be the last person still standing! Drink your opponents under the table, or have them run out of money so that they get kicked out of the bar. To drink them under the table their fortitude counter and alcohol counter must meet.

At the end of each of your turns you must drink (so long as there is a drink card on your board, which unless you’re playing against gibbons there almost always is) and whilst the drinks have a number of potential abilities the most common is an increase in your alcohol content. However, by using cards that you obtain at the beginning of each turn you can force others to drink, make others lose fortitude or even avoid a drink. There’s far more strategy then there first appears to be with alliances being swiftly made and then broken again.

The game has a fantastic feel and aesthetic and despite the lack of lore you get an excellent idea of its many colourful characters from the card titles alone. Some of my personal favourites include "No More Chainmail Bikini Jokes" and "I’m not That kind of priestess"

It’s a fantastic game that can be played over and over (and yes, it can be played as a great drinking game - I have tested this myself). It’s also a game with loads of expansion packs. Whilst I’ve not yet had the pleasure of trying any of these out, so as soon as I track them down (and I’m led to believe that somebody in the society has them) I know what I’m playing!

Wargaming on Campus: 12th July

Hi guys,

On the 12th July the plan is to gather some people together to play games of Necromunda. If you'd be interested in playing, then feel free to come along.

If Necromunda's not your thing but there are other wargames you own and want to run/play, then we'll probably have some space if you want to bring them along. We've got W/035 C, D and E booked from midday to midnight.

Hope to see you there!

New LARP: The Fall and Rise of Impact

The Impact refs have released their player's guide.

Starting at the beginning of the 2014/15 academic year, The Fall and Rise of Impact will be replacing Age of Iron as the new biweekly campus LARP.

At the dawn of a new age, Humanity teeters precariously upon the edge of extinction - yet even in this darkest hour, a light of hope shines forth with the promise of peace and a chance to build a better world. Impact shall rise again.

Impact is the last of the great cities; A refugee ark-turned-stronghold that has narrowly escaped the mysterious fate of its counterparts, finding itself hurled through the empyrean void between worlds and stranded on the shores of a hostile land populated by strange creatures. As all that remains of a vast civilisation that had lived in peace and stability for centuries, the people of Impact have had to get their hands dirty and adjust to a life that is anything but peaceful, convenient and comfortable.

Colloquially renamed to commemorate humanity’s spectacular entry into the world coined as Sanctuary ten years ago, Impact has found itself drawn into a conflict it never asked for against a powerful and numerous foe: The formidable Thari of the Eternal Kingdom of Hyrathia. Along a contested border, skirmishes have flared up into a devastating four year war which has bled both sides dry and left humanity’s last city with precious few Obliterator war constructs with which to defend itself.

Humanity does not stand alone, however. Joined together into a formal Confederation of mutual support and respect, the various insectoid Sarengid hives and plant-like Kurekin tribes allied with Impact seek to defend their mutual interests and work together to survive in a savage and brutal world. Caught between the Hyrathian front lines on one side and the nightmarish forest of Kure on the other, with dwindling resources and a population exhausted from years of war, Impact has just established the experimental Envoy initiative - a team of diplomats, explorers and troubleshooters drawn from across the Confederacy and tasked with doing whatever they feel is necessary to ensure survival.

Check out their their website and the forums for updates.

The new website

If you've tried to visit the society website recently, then you'll find that it's gone, and you're being redirected here! Do not be afraid, for this is the new website for York SF&F.

You can still visit the old website if you yearn to remember the good old days, but remember that it's no longer being updated. All new updates will be posted here, on this blog.

Our proud Abnormal Members have been drafted in to keep you up to date with what is happening in those strange parts of the society you may not frequent. You'll also find the regular society news and updates posted each week.

If you've got any content that you want to share - a campaign you're recruiting players for, a new LARP system that you want to advertise, or something you think the rest of the society would like to see - then contact the webmaster. Together we can make this site both useful and awesome.

Week 9: Special Guest Edition

Hey cool cats, this weeks email comes to you from a slightly sleepy Presidential Jon 5:

Timetable

Monday 19:00 - Magic the Gathering in the Peter Lee Dining Room, Wentworth
Monday 20:00 - Boardgames in James SCR
Wednesday 19:00 - Age of Iron in DL/002, DL/003 and DL/006
Thursday 13:00 - Society Picnic! (see below)
Thursday 20:00 - Social in Derwent Bar
Sunday 12:30 - Age of Iron in D/L/047

Other stuff (important!)

Society Picnic

Fancy a chilled out lunch in the sun with other SF&Fers? Come along to the patch of land next to the carpark behind the library (known to some as the LARP field) on Thursday this week at 13:00 for a picnic! (If people want directions meet me at Vanbrugh Stalls at 13:00 instead)

If everyone brings some food for themselves and some stuff they would be willing to share that would be peachy, also maybe blankets to sit on and other kinds of picnic-y things. It should be fun!

End of Year Meal

The plan is to go to El Piano for a meal on Thursday evening next week, please email in as soon as possible if you'd like to come. I'll be booking stuff on Thursday at some point, so that's your deadline!

Money-conscious people should note that the night should cost around £15, but this will get us some rooms to ourselves and a whole load of awesome food.

Most Important thing of all: Here's a short video of a cat singing along to rock music that everyone should see.

Have a fantastic week!

A Call to Arms!

Hi guys. Here's a few words from your Abnormal Member for Wargames:

I'm planning on running a Necromunda campaign over the summer.  Exact times and dates are TBC, but chances are it'll be on Saturday afternoons every week or two.  If you're interested, head on over to the SF&F forums where more details can be found and introduce yourself!

Also, while I've taken over organising the current ongoing Mordheim campaign, I don't really know how many other wargamers we have in the society and what games people play.  I know amongst the Mordheim guys there's some interest in Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warhammer 40k, and I'm aware that there are others in the society who play these games.  I also know we've got people who play other wargames that I know little to nothing about.  I think it'd be awesome if we could try and get more things organised.  Would there be interest in booking out rooms to play games on a regular basis, perhaps run an SF&F league or some-such if there are enough people?  Would anyone be interested in volunteering to run introduction games?  I find that the SF&F forums are a good place to get things organised, and it'd be cool if more people started posting stuff in the wargames section.

For the next academic year I'm planning on running another Mordheim campaign, using the Border Town Burning setting.  I'm likely to be running some intro games to that at the first convention of that term with the campaign proper starting in the following weeks.  If you're interested in Mordheim, which is a skirmish game based in the Warhammer world, feel free to turn up on the Saturdays of Week 9 and 10 and I'll be happy to explain how everything works and run an intro game.  Times and rooms will be in the society email, and more details including pdf copies of the rules and stuff can be found in the wargames section of the SF&F forums (have I mentioned that enough yet?)

Cheers,
Dave

Week 8: Tabletop Day brought forward

Changes to tabletop day

It has come to my attention that the late timing of Tabletop Day is unfortunately not a good date for a number of people interested in intending. (Including awkwardly myself due to a surprising family wedding.)

With this in mind, we are moving Tabletop Day to Saturday 14th June (End of week 8) I apologise for the short notice of this change.

The focus will be on games with innovative/non-standard mechanics (eg. Dread and Fiasco) but we are of course happy to accommodate more standard games. If you are interested in running a game, please contact the Society or myself.

Mordheim: What is this thing anyway?

Hi, I'm Dave, the Abnormal Member for Wargames. This is a new position, suggested after a group of us playing Mordheim decided that it would be a good thing to have someone to represent and organise wargaming for the society. This is a quick update of current goings-on and plans.

Right now there is a Mordheim campaign that's been running games every couple of weeks or so since the start of last term.

For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Mordheim is a skirmish game set in the Warhammer world. The city of Mordheim has been destroyed by the impact of a great comet, and shards of magical wyrdstone have been found amidst the ruins.

Each player takes control of a small warband of models from one of the many factions fighting for control of the treasure. Between games the characters in your warband gain experience points and explore the ruins to find new items to further their goals.

It's a lot of fun, and we usually manage several rounds of games each time we meet. If you're interested in joining, we'd be happy to have more players. I'm happy to help build a warband and run an introduction game. The campaign has an underdog system to enable new warbands to catch up to more powerful ones, so don't worry if the first couple of games don't go your way, you'll soon be challenging.

Games run on Saturdays, and we tend to book rooms from midday to midnight with games starting around 1pm. See the society emails for more information, and check out the society forums for further announcements.

As for future plans, next term/academic year, I'd like to start running a Mordheim campaign using the Border Town Burning supplement (available free). I'd also like to know if there's any interest in games of Necromunda over the summer. If you're into wargames and want to run something or just book out a room for an evening, get in touch with the society via email, the forum or at a social.

The Great Library Clean-Up!

As was proposed at the AGM by Brandon, our Librarian, we will be having a major clean-up of our extremely large library.  This will likely take the form of a spreadsheet listing all our books, and we will ask members to put a tick next to those volumes they think should be kept.  Books with only one tick will be offered to the person ticking them (for a nominal fee), and those books with >1 tick will become the new library, which can hopefully then be consolidated into a single location, and made more easily available for book borrowing.

Brandon will send around a mass email with the spreadsheet and more details soon, and you will have the rest of this term to vote on the books.

End of Term Meal

Also coming out of the AGM, we are planning to have a society BBQ on Thursday Week 9 (19th June) and a meal at a restaurant Thursday Week 10 (26th June).  If you have any suggests for where to go, please let us know.

Convention Lost Property

Age of Iron: Event 2!

This summer, Age of Iron will come to an end. It's been quite the ride, but now everything is heading towards a truly explosive conclusion. The players still have ten more weeks to make their influence felt, so we can't say for sure what is going to happen. However it goes down, it's going to be awesome, and I don't use that word lightly!

That's for crew bookings. If you're a player, it will cost a little more than £10. Yes that's right, crewing just costs ten pounds, including transport from York, access to the site, and food, glorious food. Anyway, player forms will come out with player prices over the next few weeks.

People having fun at the last event!

Reposted with permission from the Age of Iron blog.

The King is Dead, Long Live the King

So another year and another committee.  We just want to make a few announcements about next term as you all rush off home for Easter (or go back to your real people jobs):

Summer Term Convention:

Week 2 Fri-Sun (2-4th May)

Due to the exams, this will likely take place split between ground floor James (G/001/002/010/013) and 3rd floor Wentworth (W/301/304/306/307).  We will use James as a hub, and people can go off to run games in the Wentworth rooms.  I know this is inconvenient, but the Wentworth suite is fully booked all term.  Please take these limitations into account if you plan to run anything that will need >1 room.

We will publish a list of things happening at Convention in the Week 2 Monday email, so if you want to run anything could you please contact us by Sunday Week 1.

By-elections

Week 3 Thursday (8th May)

There are 3 unfilled positions in the committee: Abnormal Member for Wargames (new), Abnormal Member for Boardgames, Abnormal Member for Magic.  If you want to run, please let us know by the end of Sunday 4th May (Week3).  Email voting will run Tuesday 6th May 00:00 to Thursday 8th May 18:00, and we will have in-person voting in Derwent Bar 19:00 Thursday 8th May, with results announced at the social at 20:00.

Each position is responsible for introducing new players to their area and organizing the weekly session (as well as any extra's they want to run).  The Abnormal members are the go-to for help for other members of the society for help in that area and provide a go-between to advocate for money/time from the main committee.  They are also responsible for storing equipment if needed.

Abnormal Member for Magic (the Gathering) also has responsibility for events for other CCGs-style games, should there be sufficient demand from the membership.

It would be great if we could fill these positions, so we can continue to run all the events we have before.

Tabletop Day

Week 9 Saturday 21st June

Tom, the Abnormal Member for Tabletop games is looking for people interested in running games next term on Tabletop Day (12:00-24:00 Week 9 Saturday 21st June in the Wentworth W/035 suite), especially those using innovative/non-standard mechanics (eg. Dread and Fiasco).  Please contact the society or Tom in person, and we'll hopefully publish a list on Monday of week 9.  Additionally, if you are interested in playing or running a longer term game at any point, please get in contact as well.  Tom and Dave (Webmaster) are working on a page for the website which will make a list of starting and on-going games.

Membership

If you've been regularly coming to SF&F events, and haven't got membership yet, please do.  Its only £4, provides benefits like 10% off at Travelling Man and LARP insurance, and lets us maintain and add to the society collection of boardgames, books and kit.  This is the YUSU minimum price, a bargain really at the cost of only 1 1/2 pints, so please contribute.

If you can, please catch myself (Thomas, Secretary), Brandon (Treasurer) or Jon (President) to pay, and we'll sort you at with a card ASAP.
Happy Easter SF&F!

I'm sure you'll all join me in welcoming our new committee, and looking forward to their reign of glorious administrative efficiency, and mind numbing terror.

By-Elections will have to be held next term to fill the 2 currently vacant positions as well as the new position of (Ab)Normal member for war gaming.

AGM Decisions

3 motions were raised at the Annual general meeting these were:
  1. That the term 'Normal member' be changed to Abnormal member in any society documentation. This was carried,
  2. That a new position be created for an (Ab)Normal member for war gaming, This was carried.
  3. That the position of chairbeing be abolished. This was not carried.

Convention Cospaly:

Our new president already striding into his fresh role, has made this statement:
"Some people have suggested adding a cosplay element to next term's convention, which sounds like a pretty fun idea, so if that's something you fancy doing we're telling you now so you have time to prepare stuff over Easter. Obviously it's far from compulsory and the rest of convention will go on as usual, so there's no need to worry if you're not that interested in cosplay or unable to get a costume together!"

So that's it my proper last e-mail completed. I hope all your lives are good, that you live happily, achieve many great things, and I leave you with a reminder to always fear communists, and Connor.

Regards
-John
